Free carparking is available, with the closest carparking being in the North Ramp carpark. On street carparking is also available.
Stretching 300 metres into the Pacific Ocean, New Brighton Pier is one of Christchurch's most recognisable landmarks. Take a leisurely stroll above the water, watch local fishers at work, or pause to enjoy expansive views along the coastline.
The pier is also home to community events throughout the year, including the popular annual fireworks display.
Located beside the beach, pier and He Puna Taimoana, the Beachside Playground is a favourite destination for families.
With climbing structures, water play, musical features and the much-loved whale pool, there's plenty to explore. Accessible play spaces, including a wheelchair-friendly splash pad, help make the playground welcoming for children of all ages and abilities.
It's an ideal spot to begin or end a day by the sea.

Along the way, keep an eye out for native birdlife and enjoy uninterrupted views across the estuary, Redcliffs and the wider coastline.

Start: Rockinghorse Road, Southshore
The Estuary Edge Walk showcases the changing landscapes of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.
Beginning on a boardwalk through salt marshes and wetlands, the track continues through pine trees and open parkland before following the estuary's edge. It's an easy and rewarding walk for families, nature lovers and those looking to slow down and take in the scenery.

For those wanting to spend more time exploring the coast, the Southern Pegasus Bay Track offers a longer journey through dunes, coastal landscapes and tree-lined pathways.
With multiple entry points and no roads to cross, the track can be enjoyed as a short stroll or a full-day adventure. The route also passes playgrounds and picnic areas, making it a great option for families.

Time: Approximately 3.5 hours one way
Start: Multiple access points including Spencer Park Surf Club, Broad Park and Southshore Spit
